Not all PRP is created equal. PRP, which stands for Platelet Rich Plasma is taken from your own blood and spun down in a centrifuge. It contains a complex composition of cellular components derived from your blood biologic that can be used to treat and repair a host of injuries and conditions. There are many ways to harvest your PRP, but ideally you want a system that regularly generates a high number of platelets. Here at Easy Orthopedics in Colorado Springs we use the Emcyte PUREPRP® SUPRAPHYSIOLOGIC system which generates around 9 billion platelets with a leukocyte reduced protocol. we are happy to offer PRP injections for those patients who meet indications. We are currently offering PRP injections to the shoulder, elbow, wrist, hand, hip, SI joint, knee, ankle, and foot. This includes joints and tendons.

Are PRP injections worth it?

PRP injections can be worth it, but only if you meet the right indications. At Easy Orthopedics, we only offer PRP injections if we think they will help you. In order to get a PRP injection, you first need to be evaluated by our orthopedic surgeon to determine if a PRP injection is something that can help you with your pain. If you do happen to be a candidate, then a PRP injection, which comes directly from your own body, can be worthwhile as many people have experienced significant pain relief from them.

What is PRP treatment good for?

There is decent evidence to show that PRP injections can help with knee arthritis, patellar tendonitis, tennis elbow, and Achilles tendonitis, and can be a good alternative to a steroid injection or lubricant injection. PRP injections fall into the category of regenerative medicine, which is using your own body’s growth factors to help heal. Since regenerative medicine is a newer field of medicine, there are many other areas of the body where PRP injections are commonly given, although there isn’t the same level of evidence as the other areas mentioned above. At Easy Orthopedics we can give PRP injections to the shoulder, elbow, wrist, hand, SI joint, hip, knee, ankle, and foot. PRP into the SI joint, and hip joint require ultrasound imaging which we have at Easy Orthopedics. We currently are not doing PRP injections into the spine.

How long do PRP injections last?

The answer to this question depends on where you are getting your PRP injection. If you are getting a PRP injection to help with your arthritis, the effect is variable. Some people will say that they get a whole year of relief, while others may only get weeks, with everyone being different. Many times repeated PRP injections can buy time before someone needs to get a joint replacement. If you are getting a steroid injection because of tendonitis or bursitis, then one injection may take away your pain for good!

How successful are PRP injections?

PRP injections work well for some people, and not so well for others. It’s hard to put a number on how successful they are because there are many areas that can be injected, and the PRP from one person is slightly different than the PRP from another person (because it comes from your own body). At Easy Orthopedics, we only like to do PRP injections if we think they will help you, which is why we screen our patients to determine if you are a good fit.
